Ocean Marine Surveys Team
Ian Fagg is our Principal Marine Surveyor covering Devon & Cornwall but often undertakes work further afield including Brittany, Holland and the Mediterranean. Growing up in the SW of England, Ian spent his childhood messing around in boats, learning to sail on the river Fowey and along the Cornish coast. Summer holidays were spent afloat on his family’s sailing boat, cruising up and down the coast of Brittany and across to the Isles of Scilly.
After studying a B. Eng. Foundation in Yacht and Power Craft Design and a BA (hons) degree at the Solent University, Ian left the UK to gain further professional experience abroad. Travelling to the south of France, he began work as full time crew aboard a Swan 651. After obtaining a Captain’s licence in 1998, Ian took further work in various commands including a prototype of the J160, a Swan 59, Swan 60 and lastly of a new build Swan 82. Ian played an integral role in the specification and management of the Swan 82 build project and continued to run her for 18 months after launch before finally deciding to return home to the UK.
Ian’s career has gained him invaluable technical experience. From working with yards during build, refit and repairs, to managing marine engineers, electricians, riggers, carpenters and painters. Not only has this experience been of great value, but the 150,000 nautical miles sailed as a professional captain has also enabled him to put this technical and practical experience into context.
Ian now owns and manages Ocean Marine Surveys. In this capacity he is able to put his deep understanding of boats, materials, systems and the marine environment to practical use as a Marine Surveyor.

Nicki also has a long history of sailing. Learning to sail with her father at the age of 11, led her to further sailing with friends at university and summers spent on the coast of Brittany in a friend’s father’s borrowed boat!
After graduation and a brief career as a PA in London, Nicki decided to taste life abroad. After 6 months cruising with friends in the Solomon Islands, she headed to Turkey and began professional yachting as a Chef/1st mate. Nicki continued to work on both sail and power yachts for a further 10 years before returning to the UK with Ian to set up Ocean Marine Surveys.
Nicki’s in depth knowledge of yachts and the yachting industry along with her secretarial training and experience has made her an invaluable asset. Nicki can assist with useful advice when Ian is unavailable and is always happy to answer any queries you may have.
